I have an issue with the Crosstab in MAXQDA and will try to explain it using an example.
I have references (concretely, a publication in a PDF file) A, B, C, and D.
Furthermore, I have two codes, industrial and academic, and two orthogonal codes, discrete and batch, each in different parent codes.
I want to code the context of use cases in the publications.
So, on paper A, I apply the codes industrial and discrete; on paper B, I apply the codes academic and batch.
I apply the industrial, academic, discrete, and batch codes in papers C and D in different sections.
When I create a Crosstab table with the publications, the first code category a categorial variable, and the second code category as activated code; then Paper C appears in both rows of the activated codes, and paper D appears two times in the undefined column, and in both rows of the activated codes.
Did I do something wrong, or how does this undefined value manifest?

To calculate the 'both' code without manually reviewing each document, you can use MAXQDA's Code Co-occurrence feature. This feature allows you to identify segments where both 'academic' and 'industrial' codes are applied. Here's how you can do it:
1. Open the Code Co-occurrence Model from the Analysis menu.
2. Select the 'academic' and 'industrial' codes.
3. The model will display intersections where both codes are present.
This will help you identify documents or segments that contain both codes without manually reviewing each one.

Last question, I guess. Can I somehow calculate the 'both' code, or do I need to go through the papers again and take a look at whether a publication contains 'academic' and 'industrial'?

Categorical Variable Assignment:
- Each document is assigned the value of the subcode that occurs most often.
- If two or more subcodes are used the same number of times, it is labeled "undefined."
- If none of the subcodes are used, no value is assigned.
In your case, Papers C and D have both industrial and academic codes, as well as discrete and batch codes. If these codes are used equally, the document will be labeled as "undefined" for the categorical variable.
To resolve this, ensure that one subcode is used more frequently than the others in each document, or adjust your coding strategy to avoid equal usage of subcodes.
